2018-2019 Girls' Varsity Preview
The Dexter girls basketball team will have a fresh start this season after finishing last year with a 15-3 record and were runner-up in the Northern Maine championship game. Dexter will be having a team with 5 seniors this season. The tigers will however have the now shopmore trio of Payton Grant, Avery Herrick, and Cheyenne Beem back for this season. This years Tigers team only has one freshman, Elizabeth Kinney. Returning senior Kaylee Deering will be helping Dexter get to the Northern championship game. I caught up with the senior for a short interview.
When asked about what she hopes to accomplish this upcoming season she said “ She hopes to make it as far as they did last year and with all the returning players, that’s gonna help.” I also asked her about how she thinks the freshman can fill in for the seniors who graduated last year. She said “ I think a couple sophomore could step up along with maybe a few freshman.” The last question I asked her was what she thinks about coach Grant. She said “ Coach is great, he pushes us all to do our best”
I also interviewed the head coach for the girls basketball team, Jody Grant about the upcoming season. When asked about expectations this season he said “ we don’t get to caught up in those, we have a lot of kids returning from last year and we hope to win. We hope to improve every day, and be as good as we possibly be. As far as wins and loses go, only time will tell. The next question I asked him was how he thinks the freshman will step up for the graduated seniors. He responded with “ I think we will have several kids who will try to fill the roles of the graduated seniors. We will need kids regardless of grade to step up and be our leaders.” The final question I asked him was how he thinks will have the biggest jump this season. He said “Not really sure who is going to make the biggest jump, but several kids will get the opportunity to.”

2017-2018 Girls Basketball Preview
The Dexter High School Girls Basketball team is coming off a very successful season in 2016/2017; making it to the regional final and winning but falling short to Monmouth in the state title game. The team is hungry to get back to the state title game, but will have to do so with a young team. They lost six seniors, only have two seniors returning this year and very few younger players with varsity experience; it’s going to be a tough rebuilding year for the Tigers.
In speaking with Coach Grant concerning what he thought about this upcoming season, he said, “The most important thing during the pre- season, especially with a young team, is to get in good basketball shape.”
Since this is such a young team, the roles on the team would probably change from last year. Coach Grant added, “I’m not 100% sure (about the roles this year), it’s hard to tell who is going to do what with a younger team. The seniors are going to have to step up and lead this younger team.”
When asking Coach Grant about expectations on the upcoming season, he replied, “I never have any expectation on an upcoming season because you never know what’s going to happen, especially with a younger and new team.”
The Tigers have a very young team this year having four freshman and only two seniors. Kaitlin Webber and Becca Batron are the two seniors on this years team and played an important role on last years regional championship team. Kaylee Deering, Addy Herrick, Tory Asbury, Abby Paige and Danielle Cummings round out the juniors on the roster. Only a few underclassmen finish up the roster in Avery Herrick, Peyton Grant, Abby Wakefeild, Cheyenne Beem and sophomore Cloe Mountain. It’s going to be a difficult season for the Tigers, but also fun to watch.
